Thymopentin

Thymopentin (TP-5)

Evidence & Status

  • Moderate

Overview

Thymopentin (TP-5) is a synthetic pentapeptide corresponding to the biologically active region of thymopoietin. It has been studied as an immunomodulatory peptide in multiple older human clinical trials. Results varied substantially by indication, so the evidence does not establish thymopentin as a general immune booster or general-purpose immune therapy.

Research Summary

Older randomized human trials provide mixed, indication-specific evidence. A placebo-controlled atopic-dermatitis trial reported a modest statistically significant improvement in clinical severity at six weeks, while randomized studies also examined rheumatoid arthritis and maintenance of CD4+ cells in asymptomatic HIV infection. In contrast, a randomized controlled study in chronic hepatitis B found that the tested six-month thymopentin regimen was not effective. Historical randomized trials generally reported limited toxicity, but this old evidence does not establish modern long-term safety across uses.
