Overview
Urolithin A is a gut-microbiota-derived ellagitannin metabolite that can also be administered as a postbiotic compound. Direct Urolithin A exposure is distinct from pomegranate, ellagitannins, ellagic acid, or precursor-food exposure, and branded products are not interchangeable without formulation qualification. Human intervention evidence exists for short-term safety, biomarkers, and selected muscle outcomes, but not for longer human lifespan or general disease treatment.
Research Summary
Preclinical work supports Urolithin A effects on mitophagy, C. elegans lifespan, and rodent muscle/exercise findings; those outcomes are not human longevity results. A first-in-human study evaluated 500 mg and 1,000 mg exposures for short-term safety, bioavailability, and molecular outcomes. A randomized trial in middle-aged adults reported selected muscle strength, exercise-performance, and mitochondrial-biomarker outcomes. These findings do not establish disease prevention, general clinical treatment efficacy, or longer human lifespan.
